A "biker" isn’t always someone wearing leather and roaring down the highway on a Harley-Davidson. In many places, that image is still the first thing people picture. Yet the word commonly includes anyone who regularly rides a bicycle or a motorcycle. Think about it: your neighborhood delivery rider on a bicycle? A biker. A friend taking a weekend motorcycle ride into the hills? Also a biker. Context usually clarifies the meaning. You might hear about bike lanes for urban riders or news about biker clubs organizing rides. Either way, the term often connects riders to independence, movement, and two-wheeled life—whether powered by pedals or a motor.

The term "biker" has shifted over time. In its early modern use, it described people who rode bicycles. As motorcycles became a larger part of youth and motor culture in the 20th century—especially after World War II—the word grew strongly associated with motorcyclists, particularly those in distinct subcultures, clubs, or crews.

Today it can still mean both "someone who rides a bicycle" and "someone who rides a motorcycle," depending on context. In many American media and film references, "biker" often points to motorcyclists. In transport and city-planning contexts, it more often refers to people riding bicycles, such as commuters or casual riders. Professional bike racers are usually called "cyclists," while "biker" is more common for everyday riders, including mountain riders and people using bikes as daily transport. So while the word may evoke different scenes, the core idea is the same: a rider, on two wheels, who identifies with that active, mobile lifestyle.
