A copier, also known as a photocopier, is an office machine that makes extra copies of documents. It takes a page and quickly produces another one that looks the same. Older copiers worked mostly with light and toner, but many modern copiers are digital multifunction devices (MFDs) that can also scan, print, send documents by email, and even fax. You might use a copier to make handouts for a class or to copy important papers at work. If the copier jams, though, you may have to do a little troubleshooting.

The word "copier" primarily refers to a machine designed to produce exact replicas of documents and images. Originally, copiers used a process called xerography—using static electricity and toner—to transfer an image onto paper. These early machines were bulky and often produced grainy copies.

However, the world of copying has evolved! Today, most "copiers" are actually sophisticated digital multifunction devices (MFDs). While they still perform the core function of making copies, these MFDs also integrate printing, scanning, faxing, and even email capabilities into a single unit. They connect to networks, allowing for shared access and digital document management.

Beyond the machine, the term "copier" can also describe a person who mimics or duplicates the work of another. While the action itself is the verb "to copy"—such as when someone copies data from a hard drive or an artist copies the style of a master painter—the person doing it is the "copier." In a school setting, a student might unfortunately be called a copier if they are caught looking at a classmate's answers.

So, while the technology has changed, the basic idea behind a copier—to create faithful reproductions—remains constant. From simple office tasks to complex document workflows, copiers continue to be essential tools in modern life.
