defend

B1
verb

Pronunciation

UK

  • /dɪfˈɛnd/

US

  • /dɪˈfɛnd/

Description

To defend something means to protect it from harm, attack, or criticism. You might physically defend yourself if someone tries to hurt you, or you might defend a friend's honor by speaking up when others are being unkind. It can also mean to justify an idea or belief—like defending your thesis in front of a panel of professors! Think of a castle wall defending the kingdom within.

The word comes from Old French, meaning "to guard against." You defend something you value, whether it's a person, a place, an idea, or even just your own reputation. A good lawyer defends their client, and a brave knight defends the innocent. Sometimes defending means simply explaining why you believe something is right—like when you defend your choice of career path to skeptical relatives.
