Imagine a muscular tube that carries food and drink from your mouth to your stomach. That is the esophagus. It does not just let things fall through. It uses gentle, wave-like movements, called peristalsis, to push them down.

Most people do not think about it unless something feels wrong, like heartburn, acid reflux, or food seeming to move down slowly. It is an important part of digestion, quietly moving what you swallow to the place where your body can process it.

The esophagus is the muscular tube that carries food and liquids from your mouth to your stomach. In an adult, it is usually about 10 inches (25 centimeters) long. It runs down through the chest, behind the windpipe, and joins the stomach at the lower end. It is not just a still passage. It moves what you swallow with coordinated muscle waves called peristalsis.

At the top and bottom are ring-like muscles called sphincters. The upper one helps control swallowing. The lower one helps keep stomach acid and food from coming back up. When that lower muscle does not close well, acid can rise and cause heartburn or reflux.

This part of the body usually works quietly in the background, but people notice it when swallowing hurts, food feels stuck, or acid keeps coming up. Doctors may examine it with an endoscopy, using a thin tube with a camera. The esophagus can also be affected by inflammation, narrowing, or, in some cases, cancer.

In everyday life, you rarely think about this tube, but it does an essential job. Every sip and every bite depend on it to move what you swallow safely toward your stomach.
