fastener

A2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /fˈɑːstənə/

US

Description

A fastener is something used to hold things together or keep them closed. In many cases, it is a small item such as a nail, screw, bolt, clip, button, or zipper. Different kinds are made for different jobs. A builder may use one to join pieces of wood or metal, while a tailor may use one to close a piece of clothing.

The related verb fasten means to close, attach, or secure something. You might fasten your seatbelt before driving or fasten a bag shut. The idea is simple: it keeps something in place so it does not come loose or open by accident.
