At first, "firewall" meant a fire-resistant wall built to stop fire from spreading in a building. Today, the word is used most often for computers and networks. You will hear about firewalls helping protect devices from hackers, malware, and other online threats. Think of it as a protective wall for your digital world.

A firewall is a network security system that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predetermined security rules. Essentially, it creates a barrier between a trusted internal network and untrusted external networks, such as the Internet.

The term originated from a physical firewall – a fire-resistant wall built to contain a fire within a building. The digital version works similarly: it aims to contain threats before they can cause damage. Firewalls examine data packets (small units of information) and block those that don't meet the specified security criteria.
