inactivate

A2
verb

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ɪnˈæktɪvˌeɪt/

US

  • /ˌɪˈnæktɪˌveɪt/

Description

Imagine flipping a switch so something stops doing its job. That is the basic idea of "inactivate": to make something no longer active or effective. Heat can make a virus harmless, and certain chemicals can stop an enzyme from working. In these cases, the thing may still be there, but it is no longer able to act in the usual way.

The word is most common in science, medicine, and technical writing, but it also appears in office or system settings. A company might inactivate an old account, a membership, or a software license, which means it is no longer active and cannot be used normally.
