inconvenience

verbnoun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ɪnkənvˈiːnɪəns/

US

  • /ˌɪnkənˈvinjəns/

Description

An inconvenience is something that causes trouble or annoyance. It's not a disaster, but it can still be frustrating. Think of a flat tire on the way to an important meeting. It's not life-threatening, but it can ruin your plans and make your day harder. Sometimes we willingly accept small problems for a bigger reward, like waiting in line for concert tickets because you really want to see the band.

The word can be used as both a noun (the traffic was a real inconvenience) and a verb (I don't mean to inconvenience you, but could you move your car?). It often implies something minor, yet impactful enough to disrupt your day or plans. A truly major problem isn't usually described as just an "inconvenience."
