Instead, healthcare professionals will choose a spot—usually in your upper arm or thigh—and deliver the medication intramuscularly. This is because muscles have a richer blood supply than the tissue directly under the skin, allowing for faster absorption of the medicine into the bloodstream.

However, intramuscular isn't limited to injections. It can also describe conditions or changes inside a muscle. For example, a doctor might diagnose an "intramuscular abscess," which is a collection of pus within muscle tissue. They might also describe "intramuscular hemorrhage" after trauma or mention "intramuscular fat" when talking about body composition or imaging results. So whether the word is used for how medicine is delivered or for something happening inside the muscle itself, intramuscular always points to something located within muscle tissue.
