Imagine a creature with big, bright eyes, a long bushy tail, and a playful spirit. That is often what comes to mind with this animal. These fascinating primates are native to Madagascar, where they have evolved into more than 100 different species. While they may look familiar, they are not monkeys; they belong to an older branch of the primate family tree. Some are tiny enough to fit in your hand, while others are about the size of a large house cat. You might see them leaping through trees, sunbathing on branches, or communicating with calls and scents. The name "lemur" even comes from the Roman word lemures, or spirits of the night.

Lemurs are a diverse group of primates native to Madagascar, a large island off the coast of East Africa. Sadly, the majority of lemur species are currently threatened with extinction due to habitat loss and hunting. Conservation efforts are vital to protect these captivating creatures for future generations.
