midi

nounadjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /mˈɪdi/

US

  • /ˈmidi/

Description

"Midi" usually has two main uses. In fashion, it describes a skirt, dress, or similar piece of clothing that falls between the knee and the ankle. It suggests a length that is neither short nor full-length. In music and technology, "MIDI" stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It is a standard that lets electronic instruments, computers, and music software send note and timing information to each other. A MIDI file does not contain actual recorded sound. Instead, it stores instructions such as which notes to play, how long to play them, and how strong they should be played. That is why musicians use MIDI to record, edit, and change parts easily inside music software.
