The word "nativity" most often refers to the birth of Jesus Christ and the story around it as told in the Gospels. Think of a Christmas crèche with the manger, the star, and the stable: that scene is the Nativity. This is the meaning most people recognize first.

The word can also mean birth, place of birth, or origin in a more formal or old-fashioned way. In astrology, it can mean a person's birth chart or horoscope. These uses exist, but they are much less common than the Christmas meaning.

The word "nativity" has several related meanings, all connected to birth or origin. Most famously, when capitalized, it refers to the Nativity of Jesus Christ as described in the New Testament. This encompasses the journey to Bethlehem, the birth in a manger, and the visit of the shepherds and the Wise Men. That event is remembered every December in Nativity plays, paintings, and crèches.

But "nativity" is not limited to the biblical story. In a broader and more formal sense, it can mean birth itself, the circumstances of someone's birth, or a person's birthplace. Older writing may use it in this way. For example, "His nativity was Florence" means that Florence was the place where he was born.

In a specialized astrological sense, a "nativity" is the chart of the heavens at the moment of birth, essentially a horoscope or birth chart. Older texts may speak of "casting a nativity," meaning preparing that chart from the details of a person's birth.

So the word moves between religion, formal writing about birth or origin, and astrology. In everyday modern English, though, it usually points first to the Christmas story of Jesus' birth.
