noncurrent

C2
adjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /nˌɒnkˈʌrənt/

US

  • /nˌɑːnkˈɜːrənt/

Description

Imagine an old map: carefully made, but showing roads that no longer exist or city names that have changed. That map is noncurrent. In general, the word means something does not match the present situation or is no longer in active use. You might hear it used for information, rules, or records that are out of date. In money and business, though, it often has a more technical meaning. A noncurrent asset or liability is not something expected to be used, turned into cash, or paid within the next year. There, the idea is not that it is wrong or old; it is simply long-term.
