Imagine a town growing fast, so builders keep putting up new houses, shops, and towers. If they add more than people really need, they overbuild. The word is mainly used for real building and development. It often means putting up too many buildings in an area, or making a structure larger or more elaborate than it needs to be.

In some contexts, it can also mean building over something that is already there. But the most common idea is simple: too much construction, too much size, or too much development.

To overbuild something usually means to build more than is needed, wanted, or practical. This is the most common use in real estate, city planning, and business. A company might overbuild apartments, hotels, or office space because it expects strong demand, only to find that many units stay empty. In that sense, the word carries an idea of excess: there is more construction than the market or the situation can support.

The word can also describe a single structure that is too large, too heavy, or too elaborate for its purpose. A bridge, house, or machine may be called overbuilt if it seems bigger or more solid than necessary. Sometimes that is criticism because it wastes money or materials, though in casual use it can also sound partly positive, suggesting unusual strength.

There is another older and less common sense as well: to build over or on top of something. Even so, when most people use overbuild today, they usually mean overdevelopment or construction that goes beyond real demand. The picture behind the word is steady and concrete: builders kept going past the sensible point, and the result was more than the place really needed.
