Imagine your lungs are wrapped in a thin, protective lining, like a balloon inside a double-layered bag. Pleurisy happens when this lining, called the pleura, becomes inflamed, often because of an infection like pneumonia or the flu. This can cause a sharp, stabbing pain in the chest that gets worse when you take a deep breath or cough. The condition itself is not contagious, but the illness behind it might be. One way to picture the pain is to imagine two rough surfaces rubbing together. Before antibiotics, pleurisy was a much more serious concern and was often seen with tuberculosis.

Pleurisy (pronounced ploo-ruh-see) is inflammation of the pleura, the two thin layers of tissue that surround the lungs and line the inside of the chest wall. Normally, these layers slide smoothly past each other as you breathe. When they become inflamed, they turn rough and create friction. That friction leads to "pleuritic pain," a sharp pain in the chest that gets worse during breathing, coughing, sneezing, or sudden movement.

It is important to note that pleurisy is usually a sign of an underlying condition rather than a disease on its own. Common causes include viral or bacterial infections, such as pneumonia or bronchitis, autoimmune disorders, lung injuries, blood clots in the lungs, or, more rarely, tumors. While the pain can be alarming, treatment usually focuses on the cause and may include antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medicine, or rest.

Historically, before modern medicine, pleurisy was much more feared because it often came with tuberculosis. Today, doctors may diagnose it with a physical exam, by listening for a "pleural rub" sound, and with imaging such as chest X-rays, ultrasound, or CT scans. If someone says they feel a sharp pain in the side of the chest that seems to "catch" when they inhale, they are describing the classic discomfort linked to this inflammation of the lung lining.
