nounadjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /prˈɒsteɪt/

US

  • /ˈprɑˌsteɪt/

Description

The prostate is a small, walnut-shaped gland found only in males. It sits just below the bladder and helps with reproduction by making fluid that nourishes and carries sperm. Many men do not think much about it when they are young, but it often becomes more important with age. Over time, the gland can grow larger, which may press on the urethra and cause problems with urination. Because cancer can also develop there, doctors may check PSA levels during routine care. Think of it as a quiet worker that is important for male health but may need medical attention as a man gets older.
