Imagine shining a flashlight through a glass of water: the beam seems to bend. That is refraction. Something refractive has to do with that bending of light as it passes from one material into another, such as from air into glass or water.

This is not just a physics idea. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you are dealing with refractive effects because those lenses help focus light correctly in your eyes. You will also hear the term "refractive index" in science, which tells you how strongly a material bends light.

The word refractive describes something that bends light or relates to the bending of light. You will usually see it in physics, optics, and eye care. When light moves from one substance to another, it changes speed, and that change can make the light change direction. For example, a straw in a glass of water can look bent or out of place at the surface. That visual effect comes from the refractive property of the water.

In science, the phrase "refractive index" names the measurement that shows how much a material bends light. Glass, water, and diamonds all have different refractive indices, which is why light behaves differently in each one. In medicine, "refractive errors" are vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. In those cases, the eye does not focus light on the retina in the right way.

So in normal English use, refractive is mainly a technical word. It usually describes materials, surfaces, systems, or conditions connected with refraction, especially when people talk about lenses, light, vision, or optical science.
