In everyday American English, saran often means clear plastic food wrap, the kind you pull over a bowl of leftovers or around a sandwich. The word also has a more exact meaning: it is a type of plastic resin first sold under the brand name Saran. Saran is, first of all, the name of a tough thermoplastic resin based mainly on polyvinylidene chloride, often shortened to PVDC. This material became well known because it was used in clear wrapping films with strong barrier properties, meaning it did a very good job of keeping out air and moisture. In that more technical sense, the word can refer to the resin itself, not just to kitchen wrap.

Most learners, though, will meet the word in everyday speech, where it usually points to clear plastic food wrap, especially in the United States.
