The word can also appear in history books to mean a small fort or defensive position, and in informal old-fashioned English it can even mean a person's head.

The word "sconce" carries a little history with it. Most often, it means a light attached to a wall. In modern homes, that usually means an electric wall light, but the older picture is easy to see: a candle or torch set into a holder or bracket on the wall, lighting a corridor, stairway, or chamber without using floor or table space. That is still the core meaning, and it is the sense most people mean today.
