serious

B1
adjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /sˈiərɪəs/

US

  • /ˈsɪriəs/

Description

When something is serious, it needs your full attention because it is important, dangerous, or not meant as a joke. A broken toy is usually not serious, but a broken bone is. You might have a serious talk with a friend about their problems, or a doctor might say that an illness is serious. The idea is that the situation matters and can have real results.

The word can also describe a person who is not playful. A serious student works hard, and a serious actor gives full attention to the role. Sometimes, being serious simply means not joking around. "Are you serious?" is often used to check whether someone really means what they say.
