smarty

C2

Pronunciation

UK

  • /smˈɑːti/

US

  • /ˈsmɑrti/

Description

"Smarty" is an informal word for someone who seems clever or quick at figuring things out. It can be friendly and playful, like when a child solves a puzzle and someone says, "You're such a smarty!" But it is also often used as a tease for someone who acts like they know everything or likes showing how clever they are. Because of that, the tone matters a lot. In one situation it sounds warm, and in another it can sound mildly rude or condescending. You would not usually use it in formal writing or speech.
