speedometer

C2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /spiːdˈɒmɪtə/

US

  • /spiˈdɑmətər/

Description

Ever been on a road trip? That dial or screen in a car that tells you how fast you're moving is a speedometer. It shows your speed, usually in miles per hour (mph) or kilometers per hour (km/h).

Early ones were mechanical, with cables linked to the wheels or transmission. Now, many are digital and use sensors. But the job is still simple: it helps you know your speed so you can drive safely and follow the law.
