thousandth

A2
nounadjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /θˈaʊzəndθ/

US

  • /ˈθaʊzəndθ/
  • /ˈθaʊzənθ/

Description

Imagine dividing something into one thousand equal pieces. One piece would be just one out of a thousand. We use "thousandth" for that very small fraction and also for the number or thing in position 1000 in a series. For example, rounding a number to the nearest thousandth means keeping three decimal places. A race might be decided by a thousandth of a second, which is a very tiny difference.
