It is a word you will mostly see in medical contexts, where it describes structures, problems, or treatments connected to the windpipe. In some biology writing, it can also describe breathing tubes in insects.

The word "tracheal" comes from the Greek tracheia, meaning "rough," from the old phrase tracheia arteria ("rough artery"). This name referred to the ridged feel of the cartilage rings in the windpipe. Today, the term usually describes anything relating to the trachea, the tube in your neck that carries air to and from your lungs. It is used mainly in medical fields such as anatomy, physiology, pulmonology, and emergency medicine.

You will not often hear someone use it in everyday conversation. Instead, you might see it in a medical report describing tracheal stenosis (narrowing of the windpipe), tracheal irritation after intubation, or a tracheal tumor. It can describe injuries, infections, scans, tubes, or procedures involving the windpipe. In emergency situations, doctors may perform a tracheostomy, creating an opening in the trachea so air can pass through when the upper airway is blocked.

The word also appears in biology outside human medicine. In insects and some other small animals, a tracheal system is the network of tiny air tubes used for breathing. So while the word most often points to the human windpipe, it can more generally mean "relating to tracheae" in a biological sense. Overall, it is a precise term for something connected to an air-carrying tube in the body.
