The word can also be used more generally for something that is not enclosed or not given a surrounding border. In most everyday English, though, the simple idea is the main one: something is shown or left as it is, without a frame around it.

It is commonly used for a picture, painting, photograph, poster, or mirror that does not have a wooden, metal, or decorative border around it. If you buy a print online and receive only the paper image, with no outer support or trim, it is unframed.

This is the usual and clearest meaning. A gallery might sell framed and unframed versions of the same artwork. A family photo can be kept unframed in a drawer, or an unframed poster can be pinned directly to a wall. In each case, the object is complete, but it has not been put into the kind of border or structure people often add for display or protection.

Sometimes the word is used a little more broadly for something that is not enclosed, bordered, or formally set off. Even then, the idea stays close to the literal one: there is no frame around it. The word does not usually suggest deep freedom or wildness by itself. Most of the time, it simply describes the plain physical condition of an object that has been left without a frame.
