validation

B2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /vˌælɪdˈeɪʃən/

US

  • /ˌvæləˈdeɪʃən/

Description

Validation is not just about getting a "thumbs up." It can mean checking that something is correct or safe, and it can also mean feeling understood and accepted for who you are. Think of a mechanic validating that your car is safe to drive, or a teacher validating your answer by marking it correct. But it also goes beyond facts and correctness. A friend who listens after a hard day can give validation by showing that your feelings are real and matter. Sometimes we look for this from other people, but healthy self-esteem also grows from self-validation: trusting that your own feelings and worth matter.
