vary

B1
verb

Pronunciation

UK

  • /vˈeəri/

US

  • /ˈvɛri/

Description

Just like the weather, things do not always stay the same: they vary. To vary means to change, or to be different from one thing to another. The price of gas varies by location, and a cook might vary a recipe to match what they have at home. It can also describe a group of things that are not all alike, such as stories that vary depending on who tells them.

Think of a painter mixing colors. They vary the shades to make the picture more alive. Or think about your daily routine: if you vary it a little, life can feel less dull. The word often points to change, difference, or a break from sameness.
