ventral

C2
adjectivenoun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /vˈɛntrəl/

US

  • /ˈvɛntrəl/

Description

Imagine a fish swimming by. Its ventral side is its belly side, the surface underneath. In animals, this word usually points to the belly or lower side of the body. In human anatomy, ventral also means the front of the body because our belly is on the front. So if a doctor or biology book mentions the ventral side, think of the belly side, the underside, or in humans, the front.
