fulfill

B2
verb

Pronunciation

UK

  • /fʊlfˈɪl/

US

  • /fʊlˈfɪl/

Description

To fulfill something is to complete it, make it happen, or satisfy a need or expectation. Think of a promise: when you fulfill a promise, you do what you said you would. Or imagine a strong craving; a good meal can fulfill that desire.

You might fulfill a dream by working hard for it, or fulfill a class requirement by finishing an assignment. You can also fulfill a duty, an order, or a promise by carrying it out properly. Sometimes the word is used for something predicted, like a prophecy that comes true. It often suggests bringing something to its proper end or giving someone what is needed.
