Everyone has something they gripe about: that little annoyance that gets under your skin. It's more than just mentioning a problem; it's showing annoyance or dissatisfaction, often more than once. You might gripe to a friend about the long line at the coffee shop, or your grandfather might gripe about the weather every day. A gripe can also be the complaint itself: "His main gripe was that the movie was too loud."

To gripe means to complain, often repeatedly, usually about something minor or irritating. It often refers to everyday frustrations rather than serious problems. Think of someone muttering about traffic, a slow website, or the price of coffee: they are probably griping. The word often suggests casual, habitual complaining.

The word is related to the Old English gripan, meaning "to seize" or "to grasp." It was once used for a sharp stomach pain, as in "griping pain," and later came to describe spoken dissatisfaction instead. It's often used as a verb: "She griped about having to do the dishes." It can also be a noun, referring to the complaint itself: "His only gripe was that the coffee wasn't strong enough."

While everyone complains sometimes, a person who often gripes may sound negative or hard to please. Still, a gripe is usually about ordinary life and not deep anger. So when you hear someone voicing a small but repeated complaint, they may simply be sharing a gripe.
