Imagine you're telling a really good story and building up the suspense. Then someone suddenly speaks with a question or another thought. To interrupt means to break into someone else's conversation, activity, or train of thought. It can happen by accident, like a phone ringing during a meeting, or on purpose, though in many cases it is seen as rude. You might politely ask, "Excuse me, may I interrupt for just a moment?" Or you might feel frustrated when you are constantly interrupted while trying to concentrate. Sometimes even nature does it, like a sudden thunderstorm that stops a picnic.

To interrupt means to break the continuity of something—a conversation, an activity, a process, or even a thought. It implies stopping something that's already in progress, whether intentionally or unintentionally.

As a verb, you can interrupt someone speaking ("Please don't interrupt me!"), a task being done ("The power outage interrupted our work."), or a flow of events ("A loud noise interrupted the peaceful silence."). The interruption itself is often brief, but it disrupts whatever was happening before.

Sometimes, an interruption isn't necessarily negative. A well-timed question can interrupt a lecture to clarify a point, or a funny comment might interrupt a serious discussion and lighten the mood. However, habitually interrupting others is generally considered impolite.

The noun form, interruption, is also very common: "There were several interruptions during the meeting," referring to instances where something broke into the flow of events. You can even talk about an "interruption in service"—like when your internet connection drops!

So, whether it's a sudden noise, a spoken question, or a technical glitch, interrupt describes anything that breaks the smooth continuation of something else—a momentary pause, a disruption, or a break in the flow.
