A lamp is something that gives light, usually inside a home, office, or other indoor space. You might picture the soft glow of a bedside lamp, the clear light of a desk lamp, or a floor lamp brightening a dark corner of a room. It is both useful and part of the feel of a space, helping people read, work, or relax.

The word also has an older meaning. Before electric lighting became common, a lamp was often a small device that burned oil or another fuel to make light. In writing, it can sometimes suggest guidance or hope, but most of the time it simply means a thing made to light a place.

A lamp is mainly a device that produces light. In everyday life, it usually means a household or personal light source such as a table lamp, bedside lamp, desk lamp, or floor lamp.
