A rosette is a small round design that looks like a rose. You will often see one as a folded ribbon given as a prize at shows or contests, or as a carved or molded decoration on ceilings, furniture, or buildings. In botany, it can also mean a ring of leaves growing close to the ground from one point. The word comes from French for "small rose," which fits its flower-like shape.

The word "rosette" has blossomed over time to encompass several meanings, all stemming from its original connection to the rose flower. At its heart, a rosette is an ornamental design resembling a rose, typically circular in shape.

Traditionally, rosettes were architectural details carved into stone or plaster and used to decorate ceilings, furniture, or the facades of buildings. You can still see stunning examples of these in historic architecture! However, today we most often encounter rosettes as awards: ribbons folded and arranged to look like a rose, given to winners in competitions—from dog shows and horse races to baking contests and spelling bees. These award rosettes are symbols of achievement and recognition.

But the term doesn't stop there. In botany, a "rosette" describes a pattern of growth in which leaves spread out in a circle from the base of a plant; dandelions are a classic example. The word can also be used more broadly for a small rose-shaped arrangement or decoration made from ribbon, fabric, flowers, or similar materials. Whether it is an architectural detail, a prize ribbon, or a plant form, a rosette keeps the image of a small rose at the center of its meaning.
