unfulfilled

B2
adjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ʌnfʊlfˈɪld/

US

  • /ˌənfʊlˈfɪld/

Description

Imagine building a beautiful sandcastle on the beach, only for a wave to wash it away before you could finish decorating it. That feeling of something being left undone, or not quite right—that's what "unfulfilled" describes. It means not having reached a desired state, lacking satisfaction, or remaining incomplete.

An unfulfilled promise is one that wasn't kept. An unfulfilled dream is one you haven't achieved. Sometimes it points to a deeper sense of longing: a person might feel unfulfilled if something important seems to be missing from life. Think of a musician who never gets to share their music with the world, or a traveler whose journey is cut short; they may feel unfulfilled.
