visible

B1
nounadjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /vˈɪzəbəl/

US

  • /ˈvɪzəbəl/

Description

Something that is visible can be seen. It is not hidden or out of sight. Think of a bright red fire truck - it is very easy to see on the road. But this is not only about brightness; even something dark can be visible if there is enough light. A small change in someone's expression might be visible to a close friend who knows them well. Sometimes "visible" is also used in a figurative way, like when we say "the effects of climate change are becoming increasingly visible."

The opposite of visible is invisible - think of ghosts or things hidden from view. You can make something visible by shining a light on it, or you can make it less visible by covering it up. A skilled magician makes objects appear and disappear, playing with what is visible and what is not.
